Scientists commonly use carbon dioxide (CO2) in a supercritical aggregate state in many applications including cosmetic, pharmaceutical, food, and many other industries. Supercritical extraction with carbon dioxide is a highly efficient, environmentally friendly way of separating various components from plants. More importantly, the process can extract the components without destroying the original, desired features of the biomass which results in a purer, high quality end product.
With the use of supercritical CO2, any producer of natural plant extracts will be able to fully control the process. This method is the most environmentally friendly of all available options, including extraction done by ethanol. Scientists have also discovered that CO2 acts as a cleaning agent or antiseptic since all microbial bacteria, as well as mold or fungus, are killed during supercritical CO2 extraction.
